Obama thinks he is a good talker, but he is often undisciplined when he speaks. He needs to understand that as President, his words will be scrutinized and will have impact whether he intends it or not. In this regard, President Bush is an excellent model; Obama should take a lesson from his example. Bush never gets sloppy when he is speaking publicly. He chooses his words with care and precision, which is why his style sometimes seems halting. In the eight years he has been President, it is remarkable how few gaffes or verbal blunders he has committed. If Obama doesn't raise his standards, he will exceed Bush's total before he is inaugurated.

What about this:

Does that count as a gaffe?

I'm in the Coffee Bean on the corner of Fairfax + Sunset, killing time before a 12:30 writing meeting.

I had to use the bathroom and I didn't want to leave my laptop unattended, so I popped into the can, laptop in tow.

When I came out there was a line of 3 very pretty girls who shot me a really interesting gaze when I exited holding my open laptop.

Mercifully, it was only a quick-stop and I had not been forced to violate the integrity of the restroom.

Hypothetically speaking, had Obama not run and generated such massive African-American voter turn-out, Prop 8 (the California Constitutional ban on gay marriage) likely would have failed.

The measure, which succeeded narrowly (by 52.5%) was, according to exit polls, supported by 70% of African-American voters.

Obama's victory, what some would call the crown jewel of the civil rights movement, brought with it a curtailing of civil rights.

Is that ironic? I'm pretty sure that's ironic.
